What is Heavy Metal Detox?

The truth is, we live in a toxic world. A world fullof hormone disruptors, mico-plastics, artificial colors and flavors in ourfood, pesticides in our lawns and gardens, synthetics and forever chemicals inour clothing and furniture, carcinogenic in our air, antibiotics, heavy metals, and waste in our water.

At New England Wellness Center (NEWC) we are committedto helping you live your cleanest, healthiest, most vibrant life. Part of thatprocess is identifying all the toxins that have accumulated within your body, throughout you life, and aiding you in removing them.

This can be accomplished with a medically supervisedheavy metal detox. Our functional medicine nurse practitioners will identifythe toxins in your body and establish a treatment plan, based on the specifictoxins that reside within you.

Each of us has a unique toxic load we carry withinourselves. At NEWC our testing is patient specific, identifying your personaltoxic load and levels. Just as our testing is patient specific, our treatmentplan is patient specific, established to address and detox, the toxic burdenthat is unique to you.

Heavy metal detoxrefers to the process of removing heavy metals—like lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and aluminum—from the body. These metals can accumulate over timethrough environmental exposure, certain foods, contaminated water, industrialpollution, or some medications and vaccines.

Common Methods of Heavy Metal Detox:

1.        Chelation Therapy

  • Medical chelation involves administering agents (like EDTA or DMSA)that bind to heavy metals and help eliminate them through urine.
  •  It should be done under medical supervision due to risks like kidney strain and depletion of essential minerals.

2.        Dietary Changes

  • Increasing intake of foods that support detoxification(e.g., cilantro, garlic, chlorella, spirulina, cruciferous vegetables).
  • Drinking plenty of filtered water to support kidney function.

3.        Supplements

  • Some take supplements like vitamin C, selenium, zinc, or alpha-lipoic acid to support the body’s natural detox pathways.

4.        Lifestyle Support

  • Sweating (through exercise or sauna use),ensuring good digestion, and supporting liver health can also help with detoxification.

Important Considerations:

  • Many detox products are marketed without scientific support.
  • Overuse or misuse of detox methods (especially chelators) can be harmful.
  • Not everyone needs a heavy metal detox; testing should be done before attempting it.
