Why Has Your Libido Changed? What Your Body May Be Telling You

Hi everyone,

Can we talk about something that affects both men and women, but most people don’t exactly bring up over coffee?

Libido.

Or more specifically…

Where did it go?

Maybe you still love your partner.

Maybe your relationship is good.

Maybe you want to want sex.

But somewhere between work, stress, kids, poor sleep, hormones, responsibilities, and trying to keep up with life…

your sex drive seems to have quietly left the building.

And here’s something important:

Libido is not just about sex.

It can be a reflection of what is happening throughout the entire body.

Your body has priorities.

First, it wants to survive.

Then it wants to feel safe.

Then, when it has enough energy and resources, it has more capacity for connection, reproduction, intimacy, and pleasure.

So if your body is dealing with:

  • chronic stress
  • poor sleep
  • inflammation
  • blood sugar problems
  • gut issues
  • hormonal changes
  • pain
  • medication effects
  • metabolic changes
  • emotional overload

your body may essentially be saying:

“We have a lot going on right now. Pleasure is not our top priority.”

Honestly, that makes a lot of sense.

Think about your nervous system.

You spend the day working, solving problems, answering messages, taking care of people, managing responsibilities, thinking about what needs to happen next…

and then at the end of the day, you’re somehow supposed to instantly switch gears and feel relaxed, connected, and interested in sex?

That can be a pretty big ask.

Sometimes the question isn’t:

“What’s wrong with my libido?”

Sometimes the better question is:

“What has my body been dealing with that is making desire harder right now?”

That is where functional medicine can help us look at the bigger picture.

We may evaluate things like:

How are you sleeping?

How stressed are you?

How are your hormones?

How is your gut?

Is inflammation playing a role?

How is your blood sugar?

How is your metabolic health?

Are medications contributing?

How is your nervous system functioning day to day?

Because libido doesn’t live in one hormone or one organ.

It is influenced by your brain, nervous system, hormones, circulation, metabolism, gut health, emotional health, and overall sense of well-being.

And sometimes…

low libido isn’t the whole problem.

Sometimes it’s the clue.

Our goal is not simply to make you “want sex.”

Our goal is to help you feel better in your body.

More energy.

Better sleep.

Better hormone balance.

Less stress.

Better metabolic health.

More connection.

More vitality.

And yes…

more room for pleasure.

If your libido has changed and you’ve been wondering why, it may be worth having a bigger conversation about what your body is trying to tell you.
